Ultimate Chandigarh to Goa Road Trip via Jaipur, Udaipur, and Vadodara
This is Part 2 of a three-part series.
Part 1 covered the route, mileage, tolls and time costs for Chandigarh to Goa. This Road Trip to Goa from Chandigarh: Jaipur, Udaipur and Vadodara connects the broader itinerary.
Part 3: the Goa chapter — beaches, local food and time off the road.
Coming next.
The journey was as important as the destination
When you plan a road trip to Goa from Chandigarh, it is tempting to think only about the beaches waiting at the end. But a long drive across India offers something different: the chance to experience the changing landscape, culture and rhythm of the country one stretch of highway at a time.
For our family, the October 2026 journey was about more than reaching Goa. I was traveling with my wife, daughter and cat, driving our Tata Nexon diesel and using the road to explore different parts of India.
We set out from the Chandigarh region on 1 October. Goa was the main destination, but the route itself became a major part of the experience. Our outbound journey took us through Jaipur, Udaipur and Vadodara, then towards the Mumbai region and Lonavala before we reached Goa around 8 October.
It was a reminder that a road trip is not simply a line between two points on a map. It is a series of transitions: familiar surroundings giving way to new cities, long highway stretches leading to mountain roads, and the anticipation of the coast building with every kilometre.
The outbound legs at a glance
| Leg | Route | Distance | Driving time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chandigarh → Jaipur | ~497 km | 7–8 hrs |
| 2 | Jaipur → Udaipur | ~395 km | 6–7 hrs |
| 3 | Udaipur → Vadodara | ~260 km | 5–6 hrs |
| 4 | Vadodara → Mumbai | ~400 km | 7–8 hrs |
| 5 | Mumbai → Lonavala | ~80 km | 2–3 hrs |
| 6 | Lonavala → Goa | ~450–480 km | 8–10 hrs |
Stop 1: Jaipur — entering Rajasthan
Leaving Chandigarh marked the beginning of our journey south. Jaipur was one of the major stops on the way to Goa and our first opportunity to experience the character of Rajasthan.
Known for its historic architecture, colorful streets and distinctive local culture, Jaipur is a natural stop on a longer journey through north-western India. It can also work as a practical break before continuing towards southern Rajasthan.
For travelers planning a similar Chandigarh to Goa drive, Jaipur offers two possible approaches. You can treat it primarily as an overnight halt to break up the journey, or allow additional time to explore the city before continuing south.
The right choice depends on your schedule, driving stamina and how much sightseeing you want to fit into the trip. On a multi-day road journey, it is worth remembering that every hour spent exploring a city affects the time available for the next driving leg.
Road-trip tip: Avoid planning a full day of sightseeing immediately after a tiring drive. A flexible schedule leaves room for meals, traffic, rest and unexpected delays.
Stop 2: Udaipur — a change of pace in Rajasthan
From Jaipur, our journey continued towards Udaipur.
Udaipur is often associated with lakes, palaces and the romantic atmosphere of its old city. It also provides a different feel from Jaipur, making it a worthwhile stop for travelers moving through Rajasthan.
For a road trip, Udaipur can be more than a place to sleep. If your schedule allows, consider giving yourself time to enjoy the city rather than arriving late and leaving early the next morning.
Its lakeside setting makes it particularly appealing to travelers who enjoy slowing down between long driving days. However, the exact amount of sightseeing you can manage depends on your arrival time, accommodation location and onward departure.
Our journey was part of a much larger plan, so the priority was to keep moving towards Goa without turning every stop into a rushed checklist.
Planning tip: If Udaipur is on your route, decide in advance whether you want a quick overnight break or a proper sightseeing stop. That single decision can make the rest of your itinerary much easier to manage.
Stop 3: Vadodara — crossing into Gujarat
After Rajasthan, we continued towards Vadodara in Gujarat.
This leg represented another transition in the journey. Long road trips through several states give you a chance to experience how the surroundings change as you move across regions. Vadodara was an important waypoint on our outbound route before we continued towards the Mumbai region.
For anyone driving from Chandigarh to Goa, the broader Rajasthan–Gujarat corridor can be useful for dividing the journey into manageable stages. Rather than trying to cover the entire distance in one exhausting push, planned overnight stops allow you to rest and start the next day with more energy.
Vadodara can also serve as a base for travelers who want to explore more of Gujarat, although that would require additional time beyond a direct road trip to Goa.
Our priority was to continue towards the coast, so the journey remained focused on making progress while keeping the family comfortable.
Road-trip tip: Choose overnight accommodation with convenient parking and straightforward highway access. On a long drive, an easy arrival and departure can be more valuable than staying in the busiest part of a city.
Stop 4: Mumbai region — preparing for the Western Ghats
From Vadodara, our route continued towards the Mumbai region.
This part of a cross-state drive requires practical planning. Urban traffic, junctions and route choices can affect travel time considerably, so it is sensible to avoid treating map estimates as guaranteed arrival times.
If you are driving this corridor, check the route before leaving, plan meal breaks and keep some flexibility in your schedule. A long-distance itinerary is easier to manage when you have a realistic daily target instead of trying to make up every lost minute on the road.
For our family, the journey was not just about covering distance. We were traveling together with our daughter and cat, so rest and comfort mattered alongside the route itself.
Stop 5: Lonavala — the landscape begins to change
Lonavala was another important stop before Goa, and the journey through the Western Ghats became one of the memorable elements of the trip.
Mountain roads, green hills and winding stretches offer a different driving experience from the flatter highway sections earlier in the journey. The Western Ghats are one of the reasons a road trip to Goa can feel like several different trips combined into one.
The change in terrain is also a reminder to adjust your driving. Allow extra time for curves, gradients, traffic and weather, and avoid rushing simply because a navigation app suggests a particular arrival time. If you are heading into hill country, our essential packing tips for a mountain trip cover what is worth having within reach rather than buried in the boot.
Lonavala can be a useful break for travelers who want to divide the drive before continuing towards Goa. If you have extra time, you can explore the area; if not, it still works as a point to pause, rest and prepare for the next leg.
Driving tip: On hilly roads, maintain a safe speed, use the appropriate gear on descents and avoid overtaking where visibility is limited. If you are tired, stop somewhere safe rather than pushing through.
The final stretch: heading towards Goa
By the time we continued from the Lonavala region towards Goa, the journey had already crossed several states and changed character multiple times.
The anticipation of reaching the coast was building. After days of road travel, Goa promised a different pace: beaches, local food, time with family and opportunities to step away from the driving routine. If you are drawn to the quieter end of the Indian coastline, we have also written about the secret beaches of India’s coast.
We reached Goa around 8 October, according to our Google Maps Timeline reconstruction. The outbound journey had taken roughly a week, with the actual pace shaped by our stops and travel decisions.
That is an important point for anyone planning a similar trip. The fastest route is not always the best route for a family holiday. Breaking the journey into manageable stages can make the drive more comfortable, especially when traveling with children or pets.
What I learned from the road
Looking back at the route from Chandigarh through Rajasthan and Gujarat towards Goa, a few practical lessons stand out. They sit alongside the more general travel tips we have collected elsewhere, but these are the ones a long drive teaches you specifically.
1. Plan the route in stages
Divide the journey into daily driving legs and decide which stops are for sightseeing and which are primarily for rest. This helps prevent an ambitious itinerary from becoming exhausting.
2. Keep your schedule flexible
Traffic, meal breaks, weather and fatigue can all change the day’s plan. Build in spare time instead of relying on perfect driving conditions.
3. Make comfort part of the itinerary
Traveling with family and a pet means planning more carefully for breaks, food, water and suitable accommodation. These details are not extras; they are part of making a long road trip sustainable.
4. Treat mountain driving differently
The Western Ghats bring different road conditions from the highway sections. Drive according to visibility, traffic and road conditions, not simply the distance remaining.
5. Enjoy the journey without inventing a checklist
You do not need to visit every attraction in every city. Sometimes a stop is valuable because it gives you a comfortable night’s rest and makes the next day easier.
The road trip was only halfway complete
Reaching Goa was a milestone, but not the end of our October journey. We still had several days to explore the coast before beginning the return drive towards Chandigarh.
The outbound route had taken us from the Chandigarh region through Jaipur, Udaipur and Vadodara, past the Mumbai region and into the Western Ghats. Each stage had its own character, and the contrast between historic cities, highways and mountain roads made the journey feel much bigger than the destination alone.
In the next article, I will focus on the Goa chapter of our family road trip: exploring the beaches, discovering local food, enjoying time together and experiencing the coastal side of India after days on the road.
Because sometimes the best part of a road trip is not how quickly you reach the destination, but everything you experience on the way.
